One day while taking the bus to work, I thought to myself: "What is it like to be homeless during Christmas?" Naturally, many misconceived notions entered my head. Throughout my life, I have been sheltered, kept safe and blessed with more than just my basic needs; so homelessness was completely foreign to me.
In the winter of 2010, with no money, a sleeping bag, and only enough clothing to keep me warm during the chilly winter days and nights, I embarked on a journey to go homeless from December 23rd 30th in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver one of the poorest neighborhoods in Canada. My intention was to raise awareness about homelessness and to remind people including myself how fortunate we really are.
What you are about to read is a collection of stories with real people having real conversations in Downtown Eastside. Most of these conversations took place in alleyways, some at coffee shops and others at community centers. Please read the following with an open heart and open mind. My experiences have humbled me and changed my life. And I am certain it will have the same effect on you.
