Natsume Sseki (, 9 February 1867 9 September 1916) was one of the founders of modern Japanese literature, novelist. His works were translated in a many languages such as English, French, Russian, Chinese, German and etc. Natsume Sseki's major works include: "I Am Cat" (), "Botchan" (), "Kokoro" (), "Light and Darkness" () an unfinished novel. "Botchan" (jp: ) is a novel written and published by Natsume Sseki in 1906. The story is based on the author's personal experience as a teacher dispatched to Matsuyama on the island of Shikoku. "Botchan", means young master, is the main character of the novel, and the first narrator of it. Botchan is reckless, quick-tempered, arrogant, and intolerant, and many of his travails are at least partially self-inflicted.
