On the night before Good Friday, Dante finds himself lost in a dark wood and pursued by beasts. Rescued by the poet Virgil, the young man is guided through the underworld, travelling through the nine circles of Hell before ascending to Purgatory. Scaling the seven terraces of the mountain, the poet is reunited with his love Beatrice, who guides him through Heaven's nine celestial spheres.
Completed shortly before the author's death in 1321, Dante Alighieri's epic poem is considered to be the most famous work of Italian literature of all time. Divided into three cantos Inferno, Purgatory, and Paradise The Divine Comedy is a sweeping allegory on the nature of sin and virtue.
