Dysphagia should be identified and the patient referred for further investigations without delay. Dysphagia should be differentiated from the feeling of a lump in the pharyngeal region (globus sensation). If globus sensation is suspected the possibility of an organic disorder must be excluded. Dysphagia is uncommon in comparison with other upper abdominal symptoms. Dysphagia may also be a manifestation of a neurological condition, which usually would also have other symptoms.
