Ensign Knightley and Other Stories

Ensign Knightley and Other Stories are exceptionally good, and may rank with the work in this class of Mr Rudyard Kipling. They are varied in date, in place, and in circumstance, but through them all rings the unmistakable note of power, whether we are called upon to see Duncan win his immortal soul in the North Sea, or Hatteras lose his in the African forest. Some of these tales are grim, some are sad, and there is an occasional suggestion of cynicism as, for example, in the conclusion of A Man of Extremes If a choice must be made we should perhaps select in addition to the two referred to above The Coward and the title story as the best, but we have read the book from cover to cover and enjoyed every page of it

Alfred Edward Woodley Mason (7 May 1865 22 November 1948) was an English author and politician. He is best remembered for his 1902 novel of courage and cowardice in wartime, The Four Feathers and is also known as the creator of Inspector Hanaud, a French detective who was an early template for Agatha Christie's famous Hercule Poirot.

His prolific output in short stories and novels were frequently made and remade into films during his lifetime; though many of the silent versions have been lost or forgotten, the Korda productions of Fire Over England (1937) and The Four Feathers (1939) remain enduring classics of British cinema.
