This is the first book on Sanskrit education in India during the British rule, covering three important facets : Sanskrit as medium of instruction; a study of Sanskrit language and literature; and, the Sanskrit system of education. The study is based on primary sources and all available official records. Scattered published material books and reports and views of living scholars who had taught Sanskrit language and literature during the last days of the British rule have also been extensively covered. A critical analysis of the Daksina institution, Adam's Report and chapters on Indian and foreign Indologists are the lighlights of the study. A chronological table of Sanskrit Education, which in itself is a pioneering effort is based on the analysis of the primary sources. Even though the study relates to the efforts of the British Government, the contribution of native rulers in the states and other philanthropists have been viewed here as areas of further research. A select bibliography of the works cited is of great value for future researches.
