Jezebel's Daughter (1880) is a gothic novel by Wilkie Collins that reconstructs the events of 1828. A sinister widow, Mrs Fontaine, is unable to pay her debt and poisons Mrs. Wagner, a good hearted and progressive woman. Jack Straw, a lunatic, provides comic relief in some of the darkest scenes. Collins treats lunatics and the mentally retarded with love and kindness in this tale.
