'Loss and Gain' is a thought-provoking novel by John Henry Newman, exploring the conversion of a young Oxford student to Roman Catholicism in the mid-Victorian era. Charles Reding's initial plan to remain uninvolved in doctrinal matters is challenged by his friend Sheffield, leading Reding to search for a source of Church authority amidst party dissension and Protestant doctrine. Reding's decision to convert alienates his family and attracts the attention of various religious and philosophical sects, but ultimately he finds solace in the Roman Catholic Church. The novel was Newman's first work after his own conversion to Catholicism.
