Georges, a wealthy Parisian who likes to reside all year in his Maisons-Lafitte country house, rescues two young children from drowning while he canoes on the Seine with his dog. Neighbors come to help with the repechage. Everybody takes the children to the nearby house of Madame Rose, a charming young woman... Pierre de Villerglé is a rich and idle young aristocrat who divides his time between horse races, dinners in the city, evenings in Paris. Opera and nights at the gaming tables. This monotonous life bores him so much that he decides to retire to a small house he owns on one of his Norman properties.
