Memories from Baltic States

Memories from Baltic States 1: This picture book, one of 4 about travels in Estonia, Latvia Lithuania and Poland, is a record of mainly guided tours through these countries. Although the books are labelled Baltic States, the first book also covers some of Helsinki, the capital of Finland. The reason for this is it is one place from which to get to Estonia. It is out of synchrony with the other three books as it happened at an earlier time, but geographically it fits. Helsinki is a very pleasant little city with some interesting history and a range of architecture from old to very modern. It is clearly an artistic place. That said, perhaps the most attractive part is the coastline as the city sits on the edge of an archipelago. The images around the city are followed by a seres of the coastline as the fast ferry took us across the Gulf of Finland to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. As the time when this occurred was early April, it was still pretty cold. There was still some patches of snow. Tallinn is a very old city with a rather dramatic past. The architecture and the city in general turned out to be worth far more time than we had. It is a very interesting place to visit. Most of the visit, and the illustrations are of the 'old city'. There are quaint narrow streets with multi-storey buildings right on the footpath. Streets were either paved, or brick. Some of the streets were more like laneways. Some of the medieval defensive towers still exist as does some of their defensive walls. On top of a hill in the old town sits Toompea Castle and some of its towers. Beneath the old town sits part of the 'new' town: modern and also very neat. We didn't go as faros the 'really new' town. There are 107 still images and accompanying page of minimal description. The file size limit of the eBook format is the reason for 5 books. The original photographs (taken by the author, an amateur, with amateur equipment) are very large and so need compressing to fit in the file limit. If you have wondered what such a trip might be like, have a read. If you just would like see an amateur view of the Helsinki and Tallinn Old Town, have a read. Ideally, have a read and get as much enjoyment as the author did in being able to collect these 'Memories the Baltic States'.
