Memories from Baltic States

Memories from Baltic States 2: This picture book, one of 4 about travels in Estonia, Latvia Lithuania and Poland, is a record of a guided tours through these countries. Although the books are labelled Baltic States, the first book also covered some of Helsinki, the capital of Finland. The reason for this is it is one easy place to transit to Latvia. It is a little out of synchrony with Book 1 as it occurred at a later time (also the camera was more modern). We landed at Riga which is a very pleasant little city with some interesting history and a range of architecture from old to very modern. It is clearly an artistic place; given the events suffered during WWII it is in very good condition with lots of restoration and rebuilding having occurred. The architecture and the city in general turned out to be worth far more time than we had: partly because our guide was had encyclopaedic knowledge of the place. It is a very interesting place to visit, even without an encyclopaedic guide. One disadvantage of guided tours is that they mean there is little 'freedom' to see the sorts of things that the tour-guide isn't in favour of. Taking movies is also less easy as the tour is expected to stick to a timetable: still, it is a very efficient way of covering lots of things in a short time. The book also covers a trip into the countryside to visit to restored castles: Sigulda, Turaida and Csis. Getting to appreciate the superb wooded countryside was a real pleasure: lots of forest. There are five short video clips which give a slightly different perspective from the still images (86) by revealing the context of some of the still shots.The file size limit of the eBook format is the reason for 5 books. The 86 original photographs (taken by author, an amateur, with amateur equipment) are very large and so need compressing to fit in the file limit. If you have wondered what such a trip might be like, have a read. If you just would like see an amateur view of the city of Riga, but also some countryside of the wonderfully woody Latvia, have a read. Ideally, have a read and get as much enjoyment as the author did in being able to collect these 'Memories from Baltic States'.
