Memories from Russia Book 2: This picture book, one of 5 about travels in Russia, is a record of guided tours in Moscow and the first part of the river cruise between them. Although the books are labelled "Russia" this country is so immense that in the couple of weeks of the visit, only a miniscule amount could be experienced. This book covers some bus trips to different parts of the city, a concert by a youth orchestra and a visit to the underground (subway). The river cruise commencment and the early parts it are also covered. Like many (?) cruises the boat/ship continued through the night, clearly missing lots of interesting things. That said there was still plenty to see as we navigated canals and reservoirs and lakes. Sights such as the flooded bell tower of the Kalyazin church. A common scene along the canal was the stands of forest, such a pleasure to experience, as were the hamlets and churches (lots of 'onion' domes) along the way. We stopped off at Uglich and were able to take a self-guided walking tour (although 'guided' might not be the right word). A longer walk was undertaken in Yaroslavl, an ancient city. The huge canal locks and their operation impressed with the engineering and construction involved (not always a happy history, though). The book finishes as we cruised past the town of Rybinsk. There are 97 still images and accompanying pages of minimal description. Included is one short video clip. The file size limit of the eBook format is the reason for 5 books. The original photographs (taken but author, and amateur, with amateur equipment) are very large and so need compressing to fit in the file limit. If you have wondered what such a trip might be like, have a read. If you just would like see an amateur view of the capital of Russia, but also some of the countryside and massive engineering works undertaken in the past, have a read. Ideally, have a read and get as much enjoyment as the author did in being able to collect these 'Memories from Russia'.
