Memories from Russia Book 4: This picture book, one of 5 about travels in Russia involving a river cruise between Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Although the books are labelled "Russia" this country is so immense that in the couple of weeks of the visit, only a miniscule amount could be experienced. This book cover the first part of the guided tours of Saint Petersburg. An historic city, Saint Petersburg cannot be covered in two days! Basically one gets, in that time, to see the highlights and to miss out on lots of things and places. Day one, this book basically, was the Winter Palace and the Hermitage Museum. It also includes views of the Neva River and the impressive architecture on either bank. These took up, along with a bus tour around various streets, most of the day. We had to get back to the boat, get fed and leave in time for our 'ballet' experience. Can't do anything in Russia without music, dance and song: the ballet was Swan Lake, and it would be hard for someone not to be very impressed whether an aficionado or not. The book ends the next day with a visit to the glorious/garish Smolny Cathedral. Like everything in Russia this has sombre aspect to its history. There are 93 still images and accompanying pages of minimal description. The file size limit of the eBook format is the reason for 5 books. The original photographs (taken but author, and amateur, with amateur equipment) are very large and so need compressing to fit in the file limit. If you have wondered what such a trip might be like, have a read. If you just would like see an amateur view of the once imperial city of Saint Petersburg, have a read. Ideally, have a read and get as much enjoyment as the author did in being able to collect these 'Memories from Russia'.
