John Plowden is a young solicitor with a modest dream - a house of his own in quiet suburbia, where he can engage in undisturbed study of his beloved Classics. Originally published in 1910, this novel of the occult betrays the influence of Arthur Machen (who appears in the story as 'Ambrose Marks'), whilst lacing its creepy and disturbing episodes with sardonic humour. It is a novel no fan of classic horror fiction will want to miss!
