"Christine Headley's wonderful book" - Mark Kroll in Early Music America, February 2020
Without counter-tenor Alfred Deller, the Early Music Revival would have been very different. This book explores the background to early music, Deller's life and career, the story of the Stour Music
festival, and the parallel evolution of the Early Music Revival from the world of Arnold Dolmetsch and Nadia Boulanger, through Gustav Leonhardt, Nikolaus Harnoncourt and the Class of 1973, to the wide range of ensembles performing today.
As well as a rich narrative, the book features themed chapters on Purcell's Come, Ye Sons of Art, Away (the work which brought Deller to public attention in 1946), Dowland songs, Handel's Messiah, and Tallis's 'Spem in Alium', as well as the counter-tenor voice, the artist John Ward (who contributed so much to Stour Music visually), and the venues used by the festival.
