Story of a blackcap is an epistolary novel by Giovanni Verga. It was written between June and July 1869, during the writer's stay in Florence. The main character is Mary, a nineteenyearold girl, who has lived in a convent in Catania since she was seven. She is destined to become a cloistered nun for economic reasons. Because of the cholera epidemic that struck Sicily in 1854, Mary has the opportunity to move into her father's house in Monte Ilice. Mary is very happy and lighthearted, but her heart is saddened by the thought of returning to the cloistered life. Moreover Mary meets Nino and they fall in love with each other.
