"My winter was not a quiet one; and I had been quiet for forty years..."
Hester Posey is an elderly but respectable spinster living in the small town of Winterville. She lives a quiet life, her days spent taking in work as a seamstress, or as companion to Mrs. Robertson - who also happens to be her oldest friend and closest neighbour. But when Mrs. Robertson is murdered at a family gathering in the run-up to Christmas, Hester comes into her own.
Traversing the snow-covered streets of Winterville, searching for clues to the killer's identity, Hester finds she must also protect her beloved Robinsons from the ready suspicions of the rude and incompetent coroner, and the intrusions of sympathetic but officious police. But can Hester find the real culprit before anyone else gets hurt?
