Winchell Franks or "Fin" was a cant miss prospect at baseball, but has just been sent to the lower tier minor leagues. It is 1925, and fin has just arrived in the summer heat of Georgia to play baseball for a low level team in the hopes of making it back. Young enough to think about something else, Fin hopes that the ragged heat in Georgia is only temporary.
The clubhouse is nothing special compared to other leagues, but Fin enjoys the camaraderie and the colored batboy George who he quickly makes friends with. Teaching the young kid about the game, he lets him stay in the clubhouse while his teammates dismiss him having a young colored boy in the clubhouse.
Walking George home, Fin finds himself face to face with George's mother Mae who instantly catches his attention. As he starts thinking about Mae during the next game, Fin finds himself seeing the ball and doing better. One he thinks is a good luck charm; he continues to push the limits with a colored woman as his hitting skills increase.
What was supposed to be just a look and a kiss turns into a romance as Fin finds himself dealing with the prospect of being romantically involved with a colored woman in 1925 Georgia and hiding it from everyone. With his batting average climbing, he attracts scouts who talk about moving him and bringing him away from his hidden love.
