"The Open Boat" (1897) by Stephen Crane (1871-1900) is a short story based on Crane's experience of being stranded at sea and surviving a shipwreck off the coast of Florida. The story was published only a few days after being rescued and is about four characters stranded at sea and their desperate situation for survival with their fluctuating moods from anger, bickering, and finally, empathy for one another.
