Whisked away from their London home, Bobbie, Peter, and Phyllis find themselves in near-poverty. Their father was suddenly taken away by the authorities and falsely imprisoned for selling state secrets, forcing the family to settle in a small house in the country. Drawn to the railway station nearby, the children befriend Mr Szczepansky, who is looking for his own family in England. They also meet The Old Gentleman, a director of the railway, who may be able to help bring home those that are missing.
First published in 1906, The Railway Children has been adapted multiple times for radio, stage, and screen. A lighthearted tale of childish adventures set against the backdrop of grownup problems, it is one of the best-known works of writer and poet Edith Nesbit.
