"The Wide, Wide World" is a heartwarming tale on Providence. Ellen had heard when her father, Captain Montgomery told her mother that he had lost a lawsuit in the courts. She had noticed the withdrawn look of her mother and the sadness that had engulfed her on hearing the news. But poor Ellen did not yet know the worst of it. Her father had no choice but to accept a government position that would take him away. And because of her poor health, Mrs. Montgomery would also have to accompany him, leaving their daughter in the care of her aunt.
