Karate is a martial art that developed in the Ryukyu Islands, in modern-day Okinawa, Japan.
The three main styles of karate take their names from the village where they are practiced. NAHA-TE, SHURI-TE, and TOMARI-TE were co-developed from a local fighting method called Te and the Chinese fighting style Tode (Chinese hand).
In 1923, Okinawan masters changed the Chinese characters to Japanese, indicating that the martial arts now taught in Okinawa were no longer purely Chinese. Then the meaning of death changed to ka-te (empty hand).
NAHA TE: Origins of Goju Ryu and Kyokushinkai
SHURI TE: Origins of SHOTOKAN and WADO RYU
However, Karate was brought to Okinawa from China. It was later brought to mainland Japan in the early 20th century during cultural exchanges between Japan and the Ryukyu Islands following their annexation by Japan in the 19th century. Gichin Funakoshi was invited to Tokyo to give karate demonstrations, and in 1924 Keio University established Japan's first university karate club. In 1932, many Japanese universities had karate clubs.
After World War II, Okinawa became a United States military base, and karate became very popular among the soldiers stationed there.
As interest in karate grew worldwide, karate masters migrated to Europe and America to popularize the art. Karate continued to become popular in the West in the mid-to-late 1960s with the emergence of martial arts films. The most popular movie star at that time was Bruce Lee, who inspired many people to get involved in martial arts. Other Great and powerful karate masters of his time include Kenwa Mabuni, and Miyag. Subsequently, karate was later spread to the West and planted it's roots in the American military expedition of Japan and Okinawa after World War II and Japanese people immigrated to the United States.
