ABYSSAL is a collection of short stories that capture the anxiety and isolation of small town life by putting quiet and introverted characters into uncomfortable and occasionally disturbing situations.

This formula is established right away with the opening piece, "Dryer." Cameron is a young man who wants nothing more than to do his laundry late at night. However, his night takes a turn for the worse when a strange man drags an animal corpse into the laundromat.

Second story "Attic" takes a different approach to examining anxiety. When Marco hears a sound emanating from his attic, he becomes determined to discover its source. This morbid curiosity slowly mutates into an obsession as Marco begins to put his safety in danger to get rid of the noise.

Horror fans will perhaps most enjoy the third story, "Woods." Travis finds himself stranded in a forest after bolting away from a pursuing beast. While trying to escape the labyrinth of trees, he discovers that the beast is something far more sinister than anything he could've conjured up in his imagination.

"Departures" is a much needed breather after the intensity of the first three stories. Taking a more somber approach to the themes of isolation, the story follows a relationship on the rocks during a vacation to a muted and dejected town. The integrity of their relationship is tested when the couple make shocking discoveries about one another.

ABYSSAL ends with the stirring and abstract "Drifter." This piece closes out a collection of stories about characters on the run. Whether they're running from monsters or running from themselves, they always seem to come face to face with whatever is pursuing them.
