According to the post-mortem, retired businessman Victor Farndale died of natural causes, but his children are convinced he was killed deliberately. Has Victor simply forgotten to take his heart medication, or is there a plot afoot to frame his son-in-law Matt? Detective Inspector Collins knows a murder case when he sees one, but his new boss is not convinced, and would prefer it if he didn't spend all his time interviewing witnesses at Ulvercott House.

For Detective Sergeant Sally Holmes, dealing with a wealthy extended family living in a mansion is definitely out of her comfort zone. On top of that, she has a personal connection to the investigation which threatens to cloud her judgement, and a prickly relationship with the newly arrived DCI Dixon.

With too many suspects and not enough facts, the case looks destined to remain unsolved, but Collins and Holmes are convinced they can get a result, if only they are allowed to get on with it
