Historian and journalist Allan Bartley throws new light on a significant political player in Bruce County, Ontario. Alexander McNeill of Wiarton, Ontario was M.P. for Bruce North from 1882 to 1901. Though known locally for the magnificent mansion ("The Corran") he built on the cliffs overlooking Colpoy's Bay, McNeill's influence extended far beyond his riding. He was intimately involved with negotiations to resolve the ministerial crises of 1894-96 and worked with Sir John A. Macdonald to get a fair land settlement for his Bruce Peninsula constituents. McNeill enjoyed close ties with figures like Dalton McCarthy, Col. George Denison and Wiarton poet Wilfred Campbell.
