A rash of burglaries has got Salvo Montalbano stumped. The patterns of the crimes are so similar and so brazen that Montalbano begins to think a criminal mastermind is challenging him. This suspicion is confirmed when he starts receiving menacing letters from the gang leader, the anonymous Mr. Z.

Andrea Camilleri è nato a Porto Empedocle (Agrigento) il 6 settembre 1925. Per tutta la sua vita, nonostante il suo grande attaccamento con la Sicilia, vivrà a Roma, dove muore il 17 luglio 2019.
Frequenta il liceo classico Empedocle di Agrigento senza conseguire la maturità poiché nel maggio del 1943 con lo sbarco in Sicilia delle forze alleate fu deciso di non svolgere gli esami e che sarebbe valso il solo scrutinio.
