Apollyon

One of the most experienced hitmen in the world is putting pressure on the police inspector, who is after him, to discover something of great importance to him. The evidence the killer leaves behind in his crimes are the breadcrumbs that lead the police to the ultimate prize: the murderous organization he has defected from. Apollyon, the watchmakers who start or stop the clocks of progress, the masters of life and death, the masters of peace and war.

They work in the service of the white god, but something has caused their god to go mad. That happened in 1983, when the Siloam probe, launched by the Vatican, discovered that determined that an Extinction Level Event was approaching Earth.
