Benign Benevolent Malevolent

It is a simple question. Are we humans alone as a thinking/sentient species in our galaxy or the universe?

If there are other life forms in our galaxy and the universe, will humans ever make contact with them in some manner or has contact already happened in some form or other?

Opinions and fact differ wildly on the latter part of the above sentence, whereas more and more scientists in numerous fields are abandoning the old empirical religious idea that we are all alone and that we rule alone and supreme in the universe.

If there are some or many species, how common are evolutionary paths that all species must make as they navigate through different epochs initially dominated by fear, fable, fiction and faith in their early centuries to accelerate at astonishing rates through the investigations of the material world as empirical observation and experimentation begin to dominate and transform cultures in near unimaginable ways?

Given enough time, curiosity, intelligence and freedom, all species, regardless of location in space and time or differences must evolve similarly in numerous epochs. Unless of course, independence of isolated species is a rare thing.
