Betty Gordon is a newly-orphaned girl, who becomes a ward of her uncle, Dick Gordon. Because Uncle Dick is on the road a lot for business, he arranges for Betty to stay at Bramble Farm for the summer. It is the home of his old schoolmate Agatha Peabody, and her husband.
Though Betty goes in to her new home with high expectations, and optimism, she soon realizes just how miserable the farm truly is. Mr. Peabody is a miserable old sod, who breaks down his wife, refusing to let her speak for herself. She mustn't make any decisions for herself, and is treated like one of the servants. Everyone at the farm is forced to eat scanty meals, because the old man is a cheapskate.
Despite her miserable and repressive surroundings, Betty stands up for herself. She befriends Bob Henderson, a poorhouse boy who lives on the farm. They dream of running away together. She decides to contact her uncle, hoping he would take her away. While she waits for a letter back, Betty begins to adapt to her new life, befriending some of the friendlier locals.
