What do you profit if you gain everything, only to lose your immortal soul?

Set against the backdrop of Mardi Gras in New Orleans, the police face a series of exotic murders that rock the Voodoo community of the city.

Police Detective Dave Beausoleil finishes his night shift by picking up a lost five-year-old, who appears to have an odd affinity for sleeping in cemeteries. Stranger still, the boy seems to be somehow linked to the bizarre death of a well-known 'Root Doctor' across town. And the only other witness to the event claims an evil spirit killed him a spirit described as a dangerous swamp character straight out of an old, childhood fairytale. As the body count rises, Dave joins forces with his boss, Pere Martine, and a mutual friend at the station, Juliette Banks.

And through it all, the child seems to be the center of it.

In a bizarre twist of fate, Dave discovers that the boy is his own son, child of a beautiful and gifted psychic named Morgan Aimee, whom Dave loved deeply a number of years ago. But Morgan vanished without a trace after having her face tragically disfigured with acid during a murder investigation they had been working on together. And though Dave has searched for her, no one had ever heard from her again.

Until now.

Now she has suddenly returned in the midst of all the madness, convinced of a dark vision she has had, and locked in a last-ditch attempt to save them all. And the child that stands by her side - their son - is even more gifted than his mother. So powerful, in fact, that he has been chosen as the successor to The Book of Souls, a book that can control all the spirits. A book so hated and revered by the Spirits that they will do anything to gain control over it.

And the Dark Spirits have sent their champion, Lord Forge. But according to the prophecy surrounding Marie Leveau, only the true successor may touch it.

As Dave once again joins forces with Morgan, they search for a way to protect their child, as the Voodoo community recoils in fear. Because these victims are casualties in a war between the Houses of Light and Darkness that walks the streets of the French Quarter and stalks the bayou that surrounds the Crescent City. A war that is just beginning to heat up, and might cost the very soul of their son, and the power he is about to inherit.

Dave and his fellow police officers quickly discover how dangerous facing off with Dark Spirits can be, as he abandons any attempt to deal with the case from a 'real world' perspective. But they have allies - both real and surreal, as the Houses of Light move to help them, and the battle lines are drawn.

In an ultimate confrontation, the realms of Light and Darkness vie for absolute control of the boy, as he recovers the book from Leveau's tomb. In the end, it is only a cryptic riddle of Leveau's words that can save the child and everything he cherishes.

The Book of Souls is a tale of the empire of the human soul and the spirits that covet it, woven in a tapestry of spells and miracles. But in the end, it is no more or less than a story of the triumph of the heart, and the greatest power that we as men and women possess.
