Art Delgado was a young surfer with everything to live for until a terrible personal tragedy wrecked his dream of marrying his childhood sweetheart Becky. Heartbroken and disillusioned, he realised that he could never face up to what happened or indeed live with it - so to escape his inner demons - he decided to become a helicopter pilot in the US Army's Air Cav.
However the bitter war in Vietnam was probably not the best place to go for solace and relief, as this conflict had more horrors and tragedy to go around than anyone could have ever imagined. For Art the war was both an adventure and a distraction, but as the months of continuous combat started to take their toll on him, the grim reality of what he had signed up for began to extract a terrible price on his sanity.
As every mission took him one step closer to death, he slowly began to realise that his biggest enemy was staring him in the face - and that only a more powerful force - or the love of a truly exceptional woman would be able to avert him from a path of total self-destruction
