What is Geography?

In very simple words it can be said that geography is the description of the earth.

Eratosthenes 276 BC to 195-194 BC is called the father of geography. Eratosthenes was a Greek mathematician, geographer, poet, astronomer and music theorist. The word Geography was first used by the Greek scholar Eratosthenes.

Geography 'In Greek language it is made up of two words GEO meaning Earth and Graphos meaning describing. In this way its literal meaning is to describe the earth.

'A Greek scholar named Eratosthenes (276-194 BC) used the word Geography. At present, the meaning of the word geography is that the study of spatial and temporal variations found on the earth's surface is called geography.

Geography as a scientific subject:-

Geography is a scientific subject. Geography as a mature scientific subject deals with the following three categories of questions:-

(1) What?

There are some questions which are related to the identification of patterns of natural and cultural features found on the earth's surface, which answer the question 'what'.

(2) Where?

There are some questions which are related to the distribution of physical and cultural elements on the earth, these are related to the question 'Where'.

(3) When?

Some questions are related to the listed information related to which elements are located where. These questions are related to explanation or cause-and-effect relationship between elements and facts. Why is the question related to this aspect of geography?
