"Carmilla" is a Gothic novella written by Irish author Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. Originally serialized in 1871-1872, it later appeared as a standalone novella. The story is one of the early works of vampire fiction, predating Bram Stoker's "Dracula" by over two decades. The narrative is presented as the personal account of a young woman named Laura, who recounts the strange events that transpire after the arrival of a mysterious and captivating female stranger named Carmilla.
