Published in 1884, this is the story of the struggles of a young boy in the late-19th century, when most young people had to make their living through hard work, without any family support or any other external help.
Left penniless after his inheritance is lost by his guardian, sixteen-year-old Rodney Ropes leaves boarding school and tries to find a way to make a living, continue his education, and maintain his integrity in 1890s New York City.
In order to succeed, Rodney must overcome adversity, dishonesty, villains and bad luck. He is all alone, and goes to New York City to join the corps of homeless children. He starts working as an errand boy, but false accusations of theft cost him his job.
Horatio Alger, Jr. (January 13, 1832 July 18, 1899) was a prolific 19th-century American author, best known for his many formulaic juvenile novels about impoverished boys and their rise from humble backgrounds to lives of middle-class security and comfort through hard work, determination, courage, and honesty. His writings were characterized by the "rags-to-riches" narrative, which had a formative effect on America during the Gilded Age.
