Raised in a family of eccentric losers, George Seibenmann's only ambition is to pitch for his high school's baseball team. Ruth Hannon, on the other hand, is a young woman possessed of never
ending hope, grounded faith, and a deadly fastball. When she breaks the gender barrier and becomes the team's starting pitcher, George senses a change in the wind not only for the team but for himself as well.

Ruth's older brother coaches the team from a wheelchair. Though paralyzed from the waist down, he appears to have the determination and skill to lead the team "all the way to State." The team's remarkable string of victories causes a sensation in this most hopeless of hopeless towns until a sudden and incomprehensible tragedy strikes. But, as defeat looms, George experiences a revelation of amazing grace one impossibly suspended moment in time that changes the course of several lives.
