Clara was freed from enslavement and traveled, as the cook for a wagon train, to the Colorado gold fields. There she established herself as a founding citizen of Central City, Colorado by opening a laundry and eventually an eating establishment that served mostly gold prospectors. Over time Clara became wealthy by the standards of her day and was able to realize her dream of searching for her children sold away from her during enslavement.
