The AIS and the HARM were developed to fill a gap in the available tools for assessing and managing risk in inpatients, both forensic and general psychiatry. The need was for a practical and easily implemented set of tools and risk assessment processes a need these tools fulfil. Their usefulness has allowed the same process to be applied in other domains, including community, correctional, and youth populations. These tools are practical, sensible, and most importantly, easily implemented.
