Christian Hunt, when did you become so rude? Monique huffed, a red flush rising up to cover her face, all the way up to her hairline.
Around the same time you decided to act like a bloody tramp, Christian growled, abandoning all pretenses at civility as he snarled at her with an undisguised disgust. You disrespected both me and my wife when you kissed me earlier. And your trashy come-ons are almost as pathetic as you are. My wife knows me better than that, and she knows that I would never cheat on her, especially with some used-up trash I threw away a decade ago. So why dont you go find somebody else to annoy before I really lose my temper? he gritted out between clenched teeth, his jaw twitching with a merciless tic as he watched on in stony silence while the appalled woman slid out of the booth without another word.
Good riddance, Kip muttered under his breath as he watched Monique cross the room and take a seat in the far corner of the bar. That woman is living proof that money cant buy class.
Im so sorry, Jessie, Christian whispered, a look of concern shadowing his face as he turned to peer at her from squinted green eyes. I had no idea Monique would be here. Believe me, she means nothing to me. Never did. She was just a fling I had a long time ago, he assured her.
I know, she replied, leaning in and kissing his lips as she reminded herself that there was no need for her to feel sorry for the obnoxious woman after the vulgar manner in which she had behaved. Dont worry, darling. Im capable of holding my own, even against women like that.
Better than that, Christian argued. Kip, be honest. Have you ever seen anyone shut Monique Gabriel up with such little effort? he asked, a quiet chuckle rumbling out of him.
Cant say Ive ever seen anyone shut her up, period, Kip replied with a laugh. In fact, I think that calls for a toast, he tacked on as he raised his glass. To Jess. For taking down Monique without breaking a sweat, he proposed. Although, to be quite honest, Im a little disappointed you didnt get the chance to Mace her, he added with a sly wink.
The nights still young, Jessica murmured, a smile flickering across her lips as the two men howled with laughter.
But, in spite of her outward bravado, Jessica was still reeling with shock and anger as they were escorted to a table on the outdoor terrace for dinner. Gazing out over the exotic backdrop of the Grand Canal, she wondered if it had been naïve of her to think that Christians playboy past would not be thrust in her face in such a blatant manner. The arrogant indifference with which the woman had dismissed her had left her more than a tad unnerved, and she was panicking on the inside as a barrage of self-doubts began floating back up to the surface.
Was she out of her league with Christian? She was just a psychiatrist. She was not a part of the jet set crowd he was accustomed to. She was a stranger inside his world of extravagance and luxury. Would she truly be able to hold her own against women like the haughty socialite, women who were sophisticated and worldly in ways that she could not even imagine?
