Twenty-seasons-old Aruzhan ("Aru") has been taken in by Mirinza, Aru's mentor and a woman of vast power with ability in less than savory magical arts. As Aru grew she was expected to apprentice and learn the craft as well. The only problem is, Aru has no talent for this kind of magic and has suffered every step of the way. It's only when Mirinza realizes Aru's inability does she offer her a gift at a questionable price.
Life changes when a sickness begins entombing people within their own bodies and strange occurrences are happening elsewhere. Called away to investigate, Mirinza leaves Kevah, a shade, in her stead to help finish Aru's training despite the local dangers and strange sickness.
A short fun read that touches on some darker themes.
