The Cuban missile crisis, commonly known as the Caribbean
crisis in Russian terms and October crisis in Cuban terms is
the time highlighting the juxtaposition between the Soviet Union,
Cuba, and the United States. It is often considered as the cold
war of Cuba which was extended to a great level that there
was a major possibility of the conversion of the cold war into
a nuclear war between the two countries. The Soviet Union
started installing the missiles in Cuba as they wanted Americans
to emit the missiles placed in Turkey and Italy. Another reason
was the unsuccessful Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961 by America
which developed a huge fear of another attack in Cuba in the
minds of USSR (Soviet Union). In 1959, Fidel Castro was given
the power and was considered as the new government of
Cuba. Using his power Castro took over the important
American business and as a result, American Government
foreclosed buying goods and services from Cuba. On February
7, 1962, new tension arouse that Soviet would invade America
through Cuba. As Cuba was very close to America, it was quite
obvious that the missiles thrown by the Soviet would reach the
American cities which can not only harm the people residing
their but also pulverize the American businesses.
The theory mainly focuses on the crisis and consequences that
occurred due to the cold war. It mainly happened due to the
miscommunications, misinterpretations, and misunderstandings
between the two countries. As American had once tried the
Bay of Pigs invasion in Cuba, the Soviet Union suspected that
the Americans would invade Cuba again. In that fear, Nikita
Khrushchev, the Soviet premier decided to place the missiles in
Cuba to protect the region from another invasion. The
American government was quite alert as they knew that Soviet
will do some harmful act after the failure of Bay of Pigs
invasion. However, the prediction came to be true when the
Americans observed the missiles placement in Cuban on
October 14, 1962. The crisis sustained for 11 days until the
John F Kennedy, the formal president of US came to the final
agreement with the U Thant. The agreement stated that the
missiles placed in Cuba should be ruined on the condition that
Americans will no more attack Cuba. Khrushchev also had a
secret agreement with Kennedy to remove the Jupiter and
Thor missiles located in the Turkey and Italy. However,
Kennedy accepted his terms but desired not to reveal this to
the public. This misunderstanding between the Soviet Union and
America was converted into a major crisis. Though the problem
could be sorted through a proper communication, Soviet wished
to take a revenge on the Americans using the weapons and
missiles on its own soil.
According to the several surveys and sources, the war was
almost transformed into the nuclear war but somehow the
meetings and agreement between the two rescued the life of
thousands of people and a lot of property.
