CHARLES DICKENS (1812-1870), born in Portsmouth, he was the son of a clerk in de Navy pay office. A period of intense misery affected him during the imprisonment of his father for debt in the Marshalsea and he himself worked in a blacking warehouse. Memories of this period inspired much of his fiction, particularly the atmosphere of "David Copperfield". After that, he worked as an office boy, studied shorthand, and became reporter of debates in the Commons for the Morning Chronicle and other periodicals.
His first literary success was "The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club", when he was only 25 years old. In 1837, "Oliver Twist" began to appear in monthly numbers in Bentleys Miscellany, a new periodical of which Dickens was the first editor.
"David Copperfield" was published in 1850 and Dickens wrote "Of all my books, I like this the best", and it has always been a favorite with a wide public. It is Dickens's veiled autobiography. David, the narrator and protagonist, is characterized in the book as having perseverance, but also an undisciplined heart, which becomes the focal point of the latter part of the book.
