Doctor Dolittle's Post Office is one of three Hugh Lofting's Doctor Dolittle books, set on the west coast of Africa. It follows the theme of most of the other books in the series. At the beginning of the book, Doctor Little helped capture a slave merchant's ship, then organized the postal service of the tiny African empire, Fantippo, ruled by King Koko, mobilizing migratory birds to deliver people's letters from one continent to another. One continent, Doctor Dolittle, predicted an efficient invention of the 20th century airmail. In a later chapter, he discovers a hidden island where prehistoric creatures are thrown into another African prison, inventing animal characters and defeating at least two armies. Each animal in the Dolittle family tells a personal story. The Postal Program has grown into a worldwide postal service and publication for the benefit of all animals.
The final part of the book is a doctor's journey to meet Mudface the Turtle, the oldest living creature in the world to survive the Great Flood. The expansive story of the Great Flood is featured in a later volume of the Doctor Dolittle and the Secret Lake series published in 2015. Fri 1948
