Zak was not really sure how he ended up being a medical doctor but when he was handed a degree the choice was made to squeeze an income out of the whole ordeal. Coming from all the minority communities he could claim membership to (including being Muslim, Indian, an introvert, of the opinion that avocado toast isn't that great, etc.) Zak ended up an intern doctor at a public hospital in central South Africa tackling the expected stressors that came with being a professional in medicine. Zak's story explores what it means to be a nerdy young doctor developing human-like social skills whilst trying to stave off overwhelming anxiety and insecurity.
During the two-year slog he comes into contact with the different species that make up the spectrum of practitioners in this field; from the knuckle-dragging orthopaedic surgeons, who are actually smarter than they are given credit for, to the physicians who judge lesser beings from atop their ivory towers. Those damn hippie psychiatrists also feature. He thinks he's doing well enough when he manages to help people despite his relentless snarky comments. His internship progresses at a rather lacklustre pace, with Zak perpetually trying to teach his patients while battling colleague incompetence, chronic equipment shortages, the grumpy behemoth that is state bureaucracy and his dread for surgery.
