"Money had given him nothing but the mere feeling of brute power"

Doctor Thorne is the third novel in Chronicles of Barsetshire series.

Dr. Thomas Thorne is descended from an old and respected family and is a distant relation of the Thornes of Ullathorne, a highly respected family in the region. However, his particular branch of the family has fallen to a low rung on the social ladder.

Thomas has a ne'er-do-well brother named Henry.

Henry seduces a village girl and gets her pregnant.

When he gets shot to death by the girl's brother, Dr. Thorne arranges things for the village girl to marry a local tradesman and emigrate to America.

Dr. Thorne provides for the child, Mary, to be secretly brought up in the country and then sent to school and taught to be a lady.

Questions of rank, birth and "blood" are explored through ironic contrasts. There are characters of ignoble birth but the highest moral purity, blue-blooded aristocrats with not a speck of human consideration, and every variation in between.

Money, sadly, can erase faults on either end of the spectrum in the eyes of most members of this society, a fact that Trollope is not shy to point out.

With brilliant powers of observation, careful attention to structure, and with his mastery of the English language, Anthony Trollope created timeless art

With its wit, charm, and trenchant criticism of upper-class hypocrisies, Doctor Thorne is a beautifully written, nineteenth century tale of loyal, unfailing love.

ANTHONY TROLLOPE (1815-1882) was a British novelist and journalist, one of the most successful, prolific and respected English novelists of the Victorian era. He wrote insightful novels on political, social, and gender issues, and on other topical matters. Among his masterworks are the Palliser novels, The Warden, Barchester Towers, and The Way We Live Now.

"Doctor Thorne" is engaging, witty, profoundly moving, and full of emotional strands that seem as relevant today as when it was written. I love it"

-Julian Fellowes, creator of "Downton Abbey""
