"W.O. Hebison, owner of the county newspaper, the Record, declared that the greatest people in the state were those women and men who produced Texas." -Images of America: Rains County (2011)

Pioneering Rains County author, William Oscar Hebison (1864- 1939) has surprising answers about the early times in his short, 60-page book titled "Early Days in Texas and Rains County."

In introducing and dedicating his book, Hebison writes:

"Deeds of heroism, of stern persistence, of deprivation of the comforts of life, of a struggle...finally resulted in the establishment of homes in the wilderness of what is now our great State and County.

"A large majority of the first settlers were descendants of men who had made for our country a history showing that they had a strong sense of justice and of individual liberty, for which they unyieldingly contended, regardless of consequences."

About the author:

Born in Rains County, Texas, in 1866, William Oscar Hebison died in 1939. He owned the Rains County newspaper, called "The Record," and was an author of local Rains County history. He grew up on a homestead farm and experienced all the difficulties of life in early Texas.
