Although names of the characters are not real and some of the details are not accurate, the essence of the story is based on one womans life journey and the many difficult decisions that she has to make. The fundamental question driving Allisons search is whether she is putting her trust in the right things. The story is about Allisons fascination with art and challenges with emigration, marriage, raising a young family, and taking care of her mom who has Alzheimers. The novel takes place in Poland during World War II, as well as in Brazil and the United States. The story is suspenseful and unpredictable, with many unusual elements. It is about greed, betrayal, arrogance, pride, judgment, forgiveness, and despair. The book probes many questions of love, compassion, and death.
