"Food for the Heart"

"I just don't understand it, Merlin, why is the King so selfish?"

"Fear mostly. Insecurity."

"But most of us have that to some degree. We still don't kill people who disagree with us, consort with monsters and starve the poor!"

"Arthur, a true knight. Not one perverted by the hunger for power. A true knight detects what is good in people and feeds the hearts of those he serves."

"So a knight is a cook then?"

Merlin laughed. "Hardly. Most of them don't know how to even make a delicious stew."

Merlin pulled some stew from its pot and tasted it. "Wonderful."

He shared some with Arthur.

"In the future knights will not be called cooks. Never that. But they will be called detectives and will protect the weak and the poor."

"So why aren't King Uther Pendragon's knights doing that?"

"Because they are merely knights. They carry weapons to kill; but they haven't the heart of mercy and kindness that a true detective would."

"I want to be a detective when I grow up!" Arthur enthused.

Merlin smiled, stirred their breakfast stew. "A Knight Detective. I like that."

Then he stopped and turned fully to Arthur, who was at the stone table with Baxter leaning against Arthur's left arm, taking a short snooze, his bulbous nose wiggling with each breath in and breath out. "Then you must train harder!"

"But I already run a mile each morning, lunch and dinner."

"Yes, but I mean your heart!"

"My heart?"

"A strong body is necessary, but an even stronger heart is even more so. Your heart must be like a well, with ever more love and forgivness ready to fill the hungry buckets of people's needs."

"Then I would become a politician and not a Knight at all!"

Merlin smiled. "Now...now...you're starting to get part of what I'm telling you."

"Breakfast ready!"

Baxter stopped snorting, sat up, stretched, eyed the small bowl provided him that Merlin brought over with steaming stew.

"Yummy!" Baxter cried out.

Arthur no longer lives in Britain. Nor is he a King anymore. He is a stranger in a strange land. Falling in love with a police detective who seems to hate men, living in a small studio with the small money he can make, fighting criminals...who are really monsters...his life has become a test as never before.
