A Rising Knight: Volume 2, Issue 9
Everything falls, everything burns, and even Knights do not live forever. Breaking his own rules for once Vlad has to lead a younger Knight to safety beyond the cities and the reach of the Knight Hunters. Rules are there for a reason. There are consequences when you break them. Especially if you're the one who made them.

Excerpt

"Move!" Wraith said before braking from cover behind a short wall that was getting shorter by the second. Spells reduced the wall to rubble moments after he did. The swirling bit of darkness ran north, bare soles flying over cobble stones fitted so well he could not feel the joints between them. Neat townhouses flanked the street. Shadowed edifices under a setting sun that turned the sky to blood. He trusted Tooan to follow.

Spells peppered off the spheroid shield covering the fleeing Knights. Raindrops that sounded like bombs. They flared brightly as they died. Power crackled in air heavy with bolts of lightning in a dozen colors and streams of flame in a dozen more. Spent magic coated his tongue in the taste of ozone. The shield was holding, but with each successive hit the attenuation of the cords became just a little more out of sync. Soon holes would begin to appear, small at first. They would grow as his enemies shifted their attention to the openings. Dearly he wished he'd had time to complete his first prototype of a Harrower belt.

Tooan and he ran flat out down a side street leading to an open square in Flamméternelle. Spell fire rained down on them from what seemed like every roof and window. The Knight could sense1 his pursuers, a hundred shining lights moving in the back of his mind. If he didn't know better he would have thought there really were a hundred of them back there. The number of spells coming down was right but Wraith  did know better. Too many of those firing points just repeated the same spell over and over at regular intervals. Automated track and attack spells pre-charged with the Reigh. At best there was half a battalion after the two Knights, twenty to twenty-five soldiers at most. They kept moving from position to position, simultaneously making it impossible for him to strike back and masking their exact numbers. His enemies knew this ground and used every inch tho their advantage. Council Guards. As good as the Knight Hunters had gotten lately the Guard still made them look like chumps.

Wraith had thought they were in the clear. Jack and Olga had diverted away the last of the Broken Bolts in their path. It had been a deception. Councilor's Guards from house Javelin had come in to relieve the preoccupied Hunters and the pair of Knights had blundered right into them.
