Fitter for Longer is a health / self-help book, which addresses a question that concerns us all:

'How can we remain in good physical and mental shape well into old age?'

To answer it, the authors have examined current research evidence and have come up with many simple, practical ways in which we all can adjust our lifestyles to promote our own health and wellbeing.

Nowadays most people live considerably longer than their parents or grandparents. But the longer we live, the more vulnerable we become to the diseases of aging such as arthritis, cardiovascular disease, dementia, some cancers and so on. So, in one short, readable book the authors have tried to interpret the current academic evidence on ageing and lifestyle and make it available in a very practical way to a general readership.

The first chapter is on 'inflammation'. This is a process that underlies many of the diseases associated with ageing and understanding this will help readers to appreciate a lot of the ideas and suggestions that are put forward in the succeeding chapters. The next 5 chapters take a closer look at the major organs of the body and consider how diet, exercise and other lifestyle factors can help optimise the health of each one. Chapter 6 is on preventative measures that can be taken in relation to cancer. The final section of the book provides advice on some well tested strategies for making lasting lifestyle changes.
