A baby could heard terribly screaming inside the house where she and her mother were residing. Eagerly, one of the neighbors went to intervene upon hearing the child's cry and found the mother dead on the floor and the child still clinging for her dead mother's breast.

The child was then place into a State's home and few months later, a man claiming to be her uncle, began sorting ways to get custody of orphan infant. And he did soon after the relevant authorities verified that he was indeed a blood relative.

Ben Wilkins was a half-brother to the decease mother, had three biological children of his own with two different women, but none with the common-law wife he was now presently living with. And none of his biological children were having any sort of relationship with him either. So, getting up in age, he welcomed the fact of raising his sister's daughter as his very own; but intending on doing so with callous hands. But his common-law wife was much tender to the child and would shield her from some of the harshness of her uncle, Ben.

Nonetheless, being caught between a rock and a very hard place, Brown Sugar, has she was known, fought through several hells just to maintain her dignity, find her way in society and create a good life for herself. Fervently praying not to kill, but welcoming it, if she desperately needed to perform such a savage act.
